Melissa: So its been fun for me because I went through the process, as I was getting ready for this interview I read about you and I watched some interviews that you gave, and I have to tell you I was positively blown away by your numbers. So the review we have with them after weve looked at all the data is we want to rank them, and they rank themselves in these categories: self-discipline, competitive fire, self-belief, love of the ball, love of playing the game, love of watching the game, grit and coachability. And one of the things Ive seen recently is that we, in fact we did a study on this and found that 47% of corporate America does not know their organizations core values, which, if you think about it, on one hand is extremely surprising. Heres what were going to do. Then he shifted the next slide, to 2012, the year we were in. And we had alerts towards authoritarianism, and it was Donald Trump. And it was just extraordinary. Then all of a sudden. And so I want to sort of leave that with all of you, but I am not an authority on this, please, I am just a womens soccer coach at the university of North Carolina. No one tells us that. But basically thats one of many failed experiments that Ive done with my leaders. And I know all you chickenshits are afraid to open your mouth, but Im going to need some of you to open your friggin mouths because we cant have a bloody, you know, committee meeting in the middle of a freaking game to solve our damn problem. And so often time its not just the training environment thats critical for us, its how we can get into, again, the mindset of the players to get them to change a certain mindset or a narrative thats protecting them from getting to their potential. If you gave your teammate a 3 in this core value it meant they lived this core value most of the time. And in the old days I never shared any of this data with any of my kids. Now, the way we raise our kids, as we spend every single day ass-kissing all of them, they have no sense of authority because they know their parents are full of crap. We have won 22 national championships. And I said are you glad I shared this with you? Anson: Well, actually, Im reading all the time, but most of the ideas we bring in practice dont come directly from the reading, they just come from us looking at this thinking you know what, this isnt working. You cared about me and you still care about me. In my experience its a crock. I think that team won the national championship. Your moral imperative is not to save that man or that woman, your moral imperative is for that widow that bought stock in GE, to make sure that every single year, that dividend was the maximum figure because she needs to pay her rent. Anson: And she and I are good friends, and so Im going to work with her, and Im hoping through some of her psychological profiles she can sort out character because I would love to have that as a tool that I can use before a kid gets here. I want them to basically treat people with extraordinary compassion and kindness. The truly extraordinary do something every day. But theres some that arent going to make it, and they just, they dont believe it. She says, you know what? So were always looking for a cutting edge idea that we think can move us forward. And so I go into the session, Im invited there with every one of my staff members. Its not a sort of thing you can lead through a memorandum. This is a George Bernard Shaw quote, and it goes like this; Be a force of fortune. I took this right into my coaching profession. Anson: The irony is I speak in moral leadership conferences, and any soccer coach alive, and I always warn them if one of them raises their hand and asks me do you think you can develop leaders Im going to say no. And every one of our players, basically, as peer evaluation, evaluates every kid in the program. And again, as I mentioned earlier, I read reams of business books.
